Behnke, son of Henry A. and Mildred Behnke of 51 Kirk Drive, Town of Brighton, served as a radio operator on a B 17G, #43-37693, 369th Bomber Squadron, 306th Bomber Group in WW II. He enlisted on January 16, 1943 and was killed in action on August 16, 1944 when his bomber was hit by flak causing a fire in two engines. The bomber crashed near Obermolbitz (Leipzig) Germany. The pilot was also killed while the remainder of the crew were held as POW's. He was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross, an Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart. He was originally interred in Belgium and was later repatriated and buried in the Woodlawn National Cemetery in Elmira NY on April 5, 1950. His tombstone mistakenly identifies him as an Aviation Cadet. Aviation Cadets were not sent overseas nor awarded DFC's during WW II.
