Sex Offenders

Registered New York State sex offenders are classified by their risk of reoffending. A court determines whether an offender is Level 1 (low risk), Level 2 (moderate risk), or Level 3 (high risk). The court also determines whether an offender is designated as a sexual predator, sexually violent offender or a predicate sex offender. Offenders are required to be registered for either 20 years or for life. Level 1 offenders with no designation register for 20 years. Level 1 offenders with a designation, and all Level 2 and Level 3 offenders must register for life. By law, only Level 2 and Level 3 sex offenders are listed on the public directory. Information about sex offenders of all risk levels, including those whose risk levels are pending, is available by calling (800) 262-3257. In order to learn if an individual is on the registry, when you call this number you must have the individual's name and one of the following: an exact address, date of birth, driver's license number, or Social Security number.
