Building and Planning
The Building and Planning Offices have combined to form a co-operative unit in the Town of Brighton's Department of Public Works. The Associate Planner ensures that all building construction (new and existing) in the Town is in compliance with applicable building, safety and zoning regulations. He reviews proposed construction projects for conformity with the Town's Comprehensive Plan (Master Plan) and overall community development. This department assists the Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, Conservation Board, Architectural Review Board, and the Historical Preservation Commission.
Brighton has adopted the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code. The Code of the Town of Brighton includes the Comprehensive Development Regulations and controls land use development. Responsibilities of the Building & Planning Department include review of plans and applications for new development, issuance of permits, and inspection of construction work for compliance with these codes.
