About the Board
This Board is the hearing body for Brighton tax payers who file grievances regarding the assessment value placed on their property. After hearing the grievance through the formal hearing process, the Board of Assessment Review (BOAR) has the authority to accept or deny the tax payer's grievance. When accepting an assessment grievance, the Board does have the authority to set a new assessment on the property.
Members of the BOAR are appointed by the Town Board and consists of residents who have at least a general knowledge of property values in the community and do not include the Assessor or staff from the Assessor's Office.
Assessment grievance/complaint applications are available in the Assessor's Office or here on May 1st of each year and appointments to appear before the BOAR (which meets on the 4th Tuesday of each May), are made as completed forms are returned to the Assessor's Office so early filing is encouraged.
Formal BOAR reviews are conducted annually on the 4th Tuesday in May at the Brighton Town Hall.
